Going for Gold

Summer Olympics

The Tokyo Summer Olympics and Paralympics are here and we can’t wait to see which athletes get to go home with gold!

The Ancient Olympic Games were said to be part of a religious festival in honor of Zeus, the father of the Greek gods and goddesses. The festival and the games were held in Olympia from 776 BC - 393 AD. The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. The man responsible for its rebirth was a Frenchman named Baron Pierre de Coubertin.

The first ancient game had 1 sport, today we have approximately 45 sports with 5 new ones debuting in Tokyo - Climbing, Karate, Surfing, Skateboarding, and BMX freestyle.

In the Ancient Olympic Games there was only one winner of each game and they were crowned with an olive leaf crown; the first golden medals were introduced in 1904. In Tokyo, there are hundreds of medals waiting for Olympians!

Today’s games are all about the Olympic spirit - athletic excellence and bringing the world together. At this year’s games there were 206 global Olympic Committees and the Refugee Olympic Team invited to participate, that’s 15,000 athletes competing for a chance at gold.
